FAQs

Compatibility
Q    How do I know whether I will be compatible with others on a trip?
A    There are no simple answers. If possible go on a short trip with the individuals before committing to a long adventure. Ask people what they hope to get out of a trip and see how it compares with your goals. Don't hesitate to ask others in the group about their experiences with a particular individual.

Cost
Q    How much does it cost to get involved with VKH canoeists?
A    It's free

Q    Are your canoe trips expensive?
A    You will need to purchase a sleeping bag. Beyond that, on most long trips the cost of transportation and food are shared among the group.

Q    How much does it cost to use the group's canoes, paddles, etc.?
A    All equipment is free if you are participating in an event that has been posted on this site.

Hidden costs
Q    This sounds too good to be true --free canoeing? What's the catch?
A    We hope you will research and organise trips. All we ask is that you list your trip on this website and invite others to join you. Oh yes, send along your trip pictures too.

Equipment
Q    Can I use VKH canoeists' equipment for a private trip that I haven't invited others to participate in?
A    Absolutely. Beginning in 2006 however there will be a daily charge for this to help us replace equipment as it wears out.

Get involved
Q    How can I get involved?
A    Email: vkhcanoeists or call 613-678-2232.

Residence
Q    Do I have to live in Vankleek Hill to participate?
A    No. Over the years a majority of paddlers have come from VKH but paddlers from across Canada and the United States have participated in our trips.

Who's the boss?
Q    Who is in charge on a trip?
A    Everyone is responsible for their own safety. Trips and trip planning should be a group effort. The group should decide before departure who has the last word in the event of a disagreement involving safety.

Do's and Don'ts?
Q    Are there any dos and don't when I'm on a trip?
A    That's pretty well covered here. You may be sorry you asked.

Q    Why didn't I find the answer to my question here?
